Acupuncture is a unique therapy that uses the body’s own ability to heal itself. Fine needles are inserted and create minute and temporary "traumas" or lesions into tissues. Acupuncture triggers many of the survival mechanisms of the body which help to normalize homeostasis and promote self-healing.
What does acupuncture treat effectively?
Diseases, symptoms or conditions for which acupuncture has been proved— through controlled trials—to be an effective treatment include:
Adverse reactions to radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy
Allergic rhinitis (including hay fever)
Facial pain (including cranio-mandibular disorders)
Headache
Hypertension
Knee pain
Low back pain
Correction of Morning sickness
Nausea and vomiting
Neck pain
Pain in dentistry (including dental pain)
Periarthritis of shoulder
Postoperative pain
Rheumatoid arthritis
Sciatica
Sprains
Stroke
Tennis elbow
How many treatment sessions will I need?
Acupuncture therapy activates built-in survival mechanisms of the body and normalizes internal equilibrium. This means that it is effective for those symptoms that can be completely or partially healed by the body. The ability of the body to heal, however, is determined by genetics, medical history, lifestyle choices and age. Younger people will heal faster than older ones. Fitter people will heal faster than unfit ones. Acute short term issues will heal faster than chronic long term ones. Instead of thinking quantitatively, e.g., "how many sessions will I need", try thinking qualitatively, e.g., "are my symptoms improving." Generally, 2-4 sessions will give you the ability to judge whether you're improving. If they are it is a good idea to keep coming until symptoms are fully resolved. Keep in mind that many patients come weekly to maintain wellness and to get relief from symptoms that the body can not fully heal or resolve. This is an excellent alternative to pharmaceutical remedies that have adverse side-effects.
